As part of their ongoing partnership agreement, Northern Ireland Screen and the BBC are moving to the second year of the Youth Executive role based at BBC Northern Ireland. Both parties wish to make bespoke content for younger audiences, and to drive the creative sector in Northern Ireland towards BBC network commissioning – with a view to reflecting ‘this place’ on a UK-wide platform.
Northern Ireland Screen is offering a one-year fixed term contract for an exceptional and proven content-maker, to help drive local content to a national audience. The Youth Executive will collaborate with BBC Three and BBC NI commissioners, to identify trends and themes relevant to younger audiences, and marry those to the creative sector in Northern Ireland. The object is to develop ideas with independent production companies, which will result in network exposure.
Together, we are seeking an experienced programme-maker, bursting with ideas and a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the media consumption habits of 16 to 34 year old audiences. The successful candidate will have an exceptional understanding of the Northern Ireland screen sector, extensive contacts and an appreciation of the editorial sensibilities of the BBC.
We are looking for a self-starter, able to hit the ground at pace and to build relationships with UK-based commissioning teams that will result in pilots being funded and developed, and programmes commissioned. This candidate will build on the work of the first Youth Executive, on the BBC Three Factual Entertainment Pilots initiative – and also work with the Head of Commissioning at BBC Northern Ireland to proactively explore additional BBC Network opportunities for the local Northern Irish Independent Sector.
BBC Three is the first public service broadcast channel to transition to a digital-first service. It aims to make a range of experimental and innovative content for 16 to 34 year olds. Since its launch as an online brand, BBC Three has been a true pathfinder for the BBC and the wider industry, experimenting with new and unique ways of telling stories across different content forms and formats and with the means of distributing this content to young audiences where they watch it. It is the home of exciting and pioneering contemporary content, including RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Normal People, Fleabag and The Young Offenders.
Knowing that their media consumption is increasingly fragmented, BBC Three content can be found on a variety of platforms, whether that is BBC One or Two, iPlayer, YouTube or social platforms. The quality of much of the content has been recognised by audiences and the industry, winning awards such as RTS Channel of The Year, Broadcast Digital Channel of the Year and BAFTAs. It is BBC Three’s ambition to be braver, more provocative and more of the moment than any other part of the BBC in an effort to engage and build its relationship with younger audiences.
